Chaparral Andrew Hodges

Chaparral Andrew Hodges

I am so proud to have Andy on the label, a marvellous musician, amazing beard, and a track record to be envied...

I can without shame boast that he is the world’s leading expert on polyrhythms, with over 1200 written up in his book The Hohochi Method.

A founder member of the Oxford Improvisers Collective and former member of The Barmy Army. His wide experience and diverse talents mean that he so far has 60 catalogued entries in the British Library.

“I decided to start a blog following a dream I had the other night.  As some of you may know, I am the world's foremost polyrhythm expert, I have catalogued thousands of rhythms and polyrhythms, and have been trying to spread the use of polyrhythm to create more interesting and diverse musics.
I have practiced some of these patterns daily over the last few years, in the belief that I will eventually gain an intuitive grasp of multi rhythmic phrases. As nobody has done this before it is a bit of an act of faith. However, in my dream, I was able to change fluidly between rhythms, and in the morning when I awoke, the last rhythms I had used in my dream stayed with me.  I was able to play them without reference to a written pattern, and they were polyrhythms that I rarely practice, so this was not brought about by regular repetition.
I still do not know if I will achieve my goal of polyrhythmic fluidity, but this experience has filled me with hope, and fuelled my determination to succeed in convincing others to follow.”
